The Division of Academic Affairs works with institutions on implementing degree programs that best meet the needs of the state and its students. This includes coordinating the approval process for new academic degree programs and the review of existing programs. In addition, Academic Affairs plays an important role in fostering curricular and programmatic alignment with West Virginia’s K-12 schools — and, toward that end, works on teacher preparation and through the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium as Common Core State Standards (or Next Generation Standards) are implemented. Additionally, the division coordinates credit transfer and articulation issues with the institutions, maintaining the Core Coursework Transfer Agreement and the Advanced Placement Credit Guide.
The division’s work also includes the DegreeNow program, a Lumina Foundation-supported project that seeks to re-enroll adults with some college credit but no degree; coordination of admissions and student affairs related activities; and the Office of International Programs, which engages in professional development activities focused on fostering statewide involvement in international education initiatives.
Other areas of focus for the Division of Academic Affairs include the annual reauthorization of all West Virginia institutions of higher education; coordination of the SREB Academic Common Market that provides West Virginians an opportunity to pursue a degree that is not available within the state; coordination of the U.S. Department of Education Improving Teacher Quality State Grants; development and implementation of the WVROCKS online delivery system; and oversight for the statewide Regents Bachelor of Arts program, a non-traditional baccalaureate program that serves to award college credit for prior learning.
